Frequently Asked Questions

FAQs

Can we use our Wooshka inside?

No. Your Wooshka is designed for outdoor use only. You should not use Wooshka in any closed or indoor space including tents, sheds, barns or otherwise.

What’s the best routine to maintain my Wooshka?

Wear, tear and rust are an inevitable part of owning an outdoor steel fireplace or BBQ. However, there are things you can do to keep your Wooshka in the best possible condition. First, be sure to clean each of the grille and flat plates, as well as your dutch oven from any leftover foods. Our Heavy Duty Pot Scrubber is perfect for this.  Second, be sure to ‘season’ both the Wooshka body and its hot plates toward the end of each use. Third, always reduce your Wooshka’s exposure to moisture where practical. We suggest using a Wooshka Outdoor Cover whenever not in use. Fourth, store it away in a dry (outdoor) space.

Can I use multiple accessories on my Wooshka at the same time?

Yes, this is the magic of Wooshka! Our multi-point accessory mounting system allows you to utilise as many points as you can physically fill, with the different combinations of accessories for your Wooshka. Plus, add in the Wooshka Flue Oven and there’s really no limit to the possibilities.

My Wooshka hotplates are not perfectly level. Is this normal?

When we designed the Wooshka, we settled on a trade-off: ‘appearance’ versus ‘weight and adaptability’. Recent iterations have seen some modifications to the hotplate design to get the best outcome possible, but if you notice over the life of your Wooshka the trays drop a little, get a set of large multi-grips and ‘persuade’ the mounting points into your preferred position. Just be gentle.

My Wooshka hotplates are rusting, what can I do?

“Seasoning” both the Wooshka body and hot plates toward the end of each use is recommended as a suitable means of regular maintenance. To do this wait for the bed of coals to begin to diminish and the apply a light coat of vegetable oil with a high smoke point (Sunflower, Canola, Peanut or Rice Bran Oil are some common options); as the appliance cools naturally it will season the steel.

Can I put my Wooshka on my wooden deck?

When using your Wooshka on any combustible surface, ensure there is a non-combustible underlay beneath the firebox. This could be stone, fire-rated board, ceramic tiles, etc…, but always ensure that there are no combustible materials within 1200mm of each surface of the firebox in all directions.

What are the best pots to use on Wooshka?

Wooshka loves cast iron as it can tolerate high heat and is designed to be exposed to open flames. The attributes of cast iron also ensures that the heat is distributed more evenly and retained for longer periods. So, whether it’s our Cast Iron Camp Oven or your favourite cast iron skillet, you can’t go wrong with cast iron!

How should I store my Wooshka?

Water is Wooshka’s enemy, so you will want to keep your Wooshka dry and undercover as much as possible. Our waterproof Outdoor Cover is a perfect solution for your Wooshka firebox if you use your Wooshka often. And the Camp Oven Travel Bag is ideal for your Wooshka Dutch Oven. But we always like to recommend you bring your Wooshka out of the elements no matter what cover you use. The rule is: When it’s outside, keep it running or keep it covered!

There is black ooze coming out of the flue. What is it and what can I do about it?

That black ‘ooze’ is from creosote – essentially ‘sap’ from wet wood – which is expelled through the flue when the wood is burning. This happens when you use firewood that is not yet dry enough to burn. To avoid this, make sure that you use only the driest wood you can find. This will not only result in a cleaner flue, but a little less smoke and a better tasting meal.

How do I control the heat on my Wooshka?

Oxygen is fuel for a fire. So, the amount of airflow over the coals, wood or heat beads will dictate how much heat or flame is generated by your Wooshka. We suggest you get acquainted with the air controls on the firebox door and the configurations of your grille & flat plates to achieve the outcome that best suits your menu needs. Over time, your control of the heat or flames will become second nature. Until then, feel free to experiment!

Can you ‘over fire’ your Wooshka?

Yes. As robust as your Wooshka is, it can be adversely affected and potentially damaged if it is ‘over fired’, a term used for describing extreme, unnecessary heat in a firebox. So if you see your firebox or the first few lengths of your flue sections glowing red, that’s a good indicator that your fire might be a bit too hot. Simply stop feeding the fire and close-up the firebox to bring down the amount of air flowing to the coals.

Can I use non genuine, non-Wooshka accessories with our Wooshka?

Of course! (And be sure to share it on your social #wooshka). We love to see what our Wooshka Wanderers are doing and engage with them to continuously improve, develop and create new products that make Wooshka ownership more enjoyable!

Can the flue oven be used as a smoker?

Unfortunately, no. The Wooshka Flue Oven is a sealed unit and will not benefit from smoke in the firebox. However, the Wooshka Smoker Oven has got you covered!

I am missing a locking pin. Can I still use my Wooshka?

There are 5 steel locking pins provided with the Wooshka and it is imperative that all five are fitted correctly. 4 pins are supplied for the legs and one pin locates and locks the flue in the correct position. If you are missing any locking pins or they are not locating correctly, cease use and contact the Wooshka team immediately to order replacements.

How much weight my Wooshka handle?

Over-all – Designed to be as robust as it is versatile, a Wooshka with all the bells-and-whistles can truly hold its own. However, user discretion is advised. When using every conceivable accessory all at once – a flue oven, a dutch oven, both grille & flat plates with warming meals and the hot water jacket – you’ll find your Wooshka more than capable (within reason). But play it smart, it’s a Wooshka, not Hercules.

Grille & Flat Plates – Here we ask you to use a bit of common sense…

Out-of-the-box each Wooshka Grille & Flat plate can handle up to 3.5kgs (7lbs) of weight in the ‘warming’ position – essentially a 3.5 litre stew warming in an average weight pot. While over the flame, the only true limit is how much food you can put on them! However, heat, fatigue and age may play a part in reducing each plate’s capacity over the course of time.

Rotisserie – The Wooshka Rotisserie is tested to 7kg and that’s a fair dinkum bit of protein!

Flue Oven – Weighing in at 10kgs (22lbs) itself, the Wooshka Flue Oven can basically tolerate having its grill trays filled and not a whole lot more. What’s important with the Flue Oven is its location on the Wooshka Flue – it should only ever be located on top of the first section of flue that is directly attached to the Wooshka firebox –  after which the rest of remaining flue extends from the top of the Flue Oven.

Utensil Holder – The Wooshka Utensil Holder can handle up to 2.5kgs (5.5lbs) in weight – That’s basically a 2-litre kettle or billy and your utensils.

Camp Oven – With a 9.5 litre capacity, but weighing in at 11kgs (25lbs), over the Wok Adaptor or on one of the Grille or Flat plates in the cooking position, the Wooshka Dutch Oven is as stout as it is capable. Just make sure not to use it on either the Grille or Flat plates in their ‘warming’ positions. He’s just a bit too heavy for them.
